Scope full time, fixed term until January 31st 2029 The Institute of Technical Microbiology is an open and international institute. Together with one technician, around 20 scientific staff members, and a changing group of students, we conduct research and teaching in the fields of sustainable biotechnology, bio-based resources, and microbial wastewater treatment. We place particular importance on involving all team members in the various workflows and decision-making processes, and on fostering a collegial, respectful, and supportive working environment.
YOUR TASKS
Develop and optimize genetic systems for an extremophilic Knallgas bacteria to enhance biocatalyst efficiency and production of target compounds
Adapt microbial strains to process-relevant substrates and environmental conditions
Investigate genetic stability and performance in bioreactor
Characterize biofilm formation and interaction with electrodes to support reactor operation
Collaborate with bioengineers to integrate optimized strains into reactor systems and process workflows
YOUR PROFILE
Requirements
Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject Biology, Microbiology, Applied Biology, Biotechnology or comparable
Desired knowledge and personal skills
Strong background in molecular biology, microbial cultivation, and genetic engineering (CRISPR/Cas9, homologous recombination, plasmid-based systems)
Experience with bioprocess integration, and biofilm analysis and downstream processing of microbial biomass/ product
Skills in analytical techniques, protein purification and data interpretation
Experience in setting up sequencing workflows to monitor genetic stability and performance in bioprocesses
Excellent German and English communication skills (B2/C1); international research experience is advantageous
