in the third-party funded project ‘Wadi Abu Dom Investigations – El Rum Oasis’ at the earliest possible date. We are offering a full-time position limited until 31 Octobre 2028.



Your tasks:

+ A scientific evaluation of a substantial survey database from Wadi Abu Dom in Sudan, focusing on landscape archaeology. The data is available in geodatabase format. Finds from individual sites are processed as tables. Find data must be incorporated into the georeferenced geodatabase and existing find sites analysed based on their chronological and functional classification.

Previous research into the dataset has mainly been based on geoarchaeological and social science approaches. In addition to continuing this research, it would be desirable to expand it with further theoretical and methodological approaches. Furthermore, other content-related and administrative tasks connected with completing the project are to be carried out in consultation with the project manager and the other project participants. This includes maintaining contact with Sudanese Antiquities Administration employees, even if no fieldwork can take place in the near future.

Core requirements:


MA and PhD in Prehistoric or Near Eastern Archaeology or Egyptology, with a strong focus on archaeology and quantitative methods. Knowledge of GIS, databases, and structured data analysis (e.g. SQL). Knowledge of archaeological survey methods Experience in interdisciplinary work

Proof can be provided in the form of studies or a certificate, participation in a relevant excavation or survey, relevant professional experience, or a qualification thesis.



Additionally desirable:


Knowledge of the archaeology and cultural history of Sudan Experience in conducting and/or evaluating archaeological surveys in desert areas or in areas that are culturally and geographically comparable Knowledge of archaeoinformatics methods (e.g. statistical analysis of archaeological findings/finds using R or another statistics programme). Proficiency in common vector drawing programmes
