YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Finance & Accounting Specialist will be a member of the Europe Finance and Operations team and provides highly specialized finance/accounting-related services to the Europe Region of The Nature Conservancy. They provide accounting, financial and operational support to help advance the Europe Region. Responsibilities range from Contracts, accounting, budgeting and reporting assistance. They are service-oriented, have strong organizational and systems skills, and possess the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A positive attitude is essential.
This position is a fixed-term appointment for one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs. Location for the position is Berlin, Germany.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Finance & Contract Specialist provides specialized services in financial management and reporting; accounting; private awards management; monitoring and maintaining all financial information and processing of internal financial forms for the Europe Region.
The position administers and maintains finance/accounting activities in accordance with local law and TNC policies and procedures and best practices in financial management.
They will assist the Manager of Finance Europe and Operations in developing the annual budget, preparing forecasts, monitoring and maintaining all financial information, producing month-end reports and analyses, and preparing journal entries and invoice payments. They will monitor monthly accounting reports and key asset and liability account balances, and provide recommendations related to finances in the overall organizational planning, policy development and implementation. They will work with external accounting firm ensure compliance with local requirements and reconcile local books with TNC books and support external accounting firm in Germany, Switzerland, and the UK to prepare annual financial statements.
They will aid staff in finance-related work and respond to moderately complex employee/management questions and problems based on knowledge of the subject area. This position reports to the Manager of Finance for Europe Region.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
· Ensures TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met.
· Reinforces consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field.
· Responsible for the day-to-day detailed accounting/financial transactions for the business unit and ad-hoc reporting and analysis as needed.
· Coordinate projects with several variables and work within a defined timeline and budget.
· Ensure programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
· Financial responsibilities include purchasing, processing invoices, managing contracts and assisting with budget preparation.
· Demonstrates sensitivity in handling confidential information.
· Duties may require non-routine analysis, research and follow-through.
· Reinforces consistency in the organization's policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field.
· Strong skills of coordination of information related to projects among other business units and should work with a high degree of autonomy on coordinating information and providing information for the BU team.
· Responsible for supporting in drafting contracts, grants, and other agreements within assigned portfolio.
· Complete other duties as assigned by the Finance Manager & DFO.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 3 years' related experience or equivalent combination.
· Experience with GAAP and fund accounting principles, practices and regulations.
· Experience using automated accounting systems.
· Experience with accounting/financial issues and analysis.
· Technical experience with spreadsheet programs, general ledger reports and financial management tools.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Examples)
· Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data. Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel.
· Strong organizational skills.
· Accuracy, attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
· Non-profit accounting experience.
· May require technical expertise in complex accounting/financial issues.
· Excellent German and English language skills, both written and spoken, are required
