Job Description

The Embassy of Ireland in Berlin is seeking to recruit an individual for the role of EU Presidency Policy Officer. This is a temporary, full time role, beginning March 2026 until December 2026, to support Ireland’s six month Presidency of the Council of the European Union (1 July - 31 December 2026). Applicants must be highly motivated, enthusiastic and hardworking with excellent communication, English and German language, and interpersonal skills.

Roles and Responsibilities:



The precise range of duties will vary over time according to the needs of the Embassy, but will include the following:

? Assist in the planning and development of regular events in relation to the EU Presidency, hosted at Head of Mission level and below.

? Lead on all logistical elements related to the execution of EU Presidency-related events, including arranging and managing the relevant service providers, project partners, speakers and others.

? Assist in the planning and delivery of outreach activities and meetings with local and state-level governments, parliaments and ministries, including travel arrangements.

? Support the planning and delivery of visits by Ministers, officials and others from Ireland to Germany.

? Attend meetings, conferences, seminars, and other engagements, representing the Embassy.

? Carry out policy research and analysis and draft regular reports and briefings on files relevant to the EU Presidency.

? Represent the Embassy at events, including occasionally delivering presentations as required.

? Identify and make relevant contacts, and ensure the contact database is updated and maintained.

? Provide bookkeeping support in relation to Mission Promotion and Outreach expenditure arising from the EU Presidency programme.

? Assist in the creation of suitable public messaging for the Embassy social media platforms in relation to the EU Presidency.

? Keep up-to-date on developments in Germany and internationally, with a focus on elements relevant to the EU Presidency.

? Be able to communicate fluently in both English and German.

? Provide translation, proofreading and informal interpretation.

? Provide general administrative support as required.

? Provide support to other teams within the Embassy as required.

? In addition to the above, the EU Presidency Policy Officer may be required to carry out other functions subject to the business needs of the Embassy, including periodic out of hours support at events or attendance at meetings.

Essential Requirements:



? Graduate degree in a discipline of relevance to the role (e.g. Politics, Economics, Business, Media / Communications, International Relations or Law);

? Fluency in English and German;

? Ability to quickly assimilate knowledge of the Irish political and economic landscape;

? Effective communication and reporting skills (including understanding, summarising, reporting and conveying complex information);

? High degree of integrity and trust;

? Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a busy team;

? Strong analytical capacity;

? Good representational, networking and influencing skills;

? A high degree of commitment and flexibility, and an ability to adapt to a range of challenges;

? Administrative, planning and organisational skills;

? A strong interest in and knowledge of EU affairs, procedures and institutions;

? Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with good presentation skills;

Desirable Skills and Experience:



? Knowledge of Irish public affairs and Irish government positions on key EU policy issues;

? Knowledge of German public affairs and German government positions on key EU policy issues;

? Additional language skills could be advantageous.

? Minimum of two years relevant work experience;

Terms and conditions of employment:



? The successful candidate will be hired on a fixed-term contract of up to 10 months, commencing in March 2026 and ending in December 2026, and subject to the relevant provisions of German tax and labour law;

? The successful candidate will be based at the Embassy of Ireland to Germany in Berlin; Embassy of Ireland Jägerstraße 51 10117 Berlin.

? The salary for the position is €48,136.46 per annum pro rata, paid locally on a monthly basis into a bank account; successful candidate must therefore have a bank account.

? Annual Leave entitlement of 26 days calculated on a pro rata basis according to length of contract;

? There will be a probationary period of 2 months;

? There is no entitlement to civil service status;

? Current Irish civil servants are not eligible to apply for this role unless already on a career break at the time of application;

? Hours of work consist of 35 hours per week, with standard office hours from Monday to Friday.

Selection Process:



? Depending on the number of applications received, a short-listing of candidates to be called for a competency-based interview will be undertaken based on the essential requirements above.

? A panel will be formed from which any future vacancies may be filled.
