Research Team Manager - Sensor Solutions

We are seeking a creative and forward-thinking scientist with expertise in applied physics to help shape the future of industrial sensing technologies. You will initially contribute to expanding our cutting-edge non-invasive process sensing technologies, collaborating within an interdisciplinary team in our Research Center (ABB Campus Mannheim) and globally across ABB.

Key responsibilities

You will initiate, lead, and contribute to research projects in collaboration with ABB divisions, product development teams, customers, partners, and academic institutions worldwide. You will conduct feasibility studies and develop proofs of concept for emerging sensing technologies, assessing their relevance for current and future ABB products. You will design and build prototypes to validate concepts and present findings to internal stakeholders, customers, and at international conferences. You will protect intellectual property through patent applications and contribute to scientific publications. You will leverage ABB’s global learning ecosystem to continuously develop your technical and interpersonal skills to advance your career.

Qualifications for the role

You hold a degree in applied physics or a related field, and bring either academic experience (PhD) or industry experience (3 years minimum). You enjoy hands-on experimentation and problem-solving, and are open to learning new approaches. You feature a broad understanding of mechanical and physical behavior in sensing applications. You are experienced in Python for signal processing and sensor data analysis. Experience in vibration analysis or related fields is an advantage. Hands-on experience with electronics prototyping and basic CAD design is beneficial. Experience in process industries or related domains is considered a plus. Proficiency in English is required; German language skills are a plus.
