Job Description

The Museum is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Conservator to join the Registration and Conservation Business Unit. Reporting directly to the Manager, Preventive Conservation, the Senior Conservator, Preventive and Collection Hazard Management will play a key role in the development and implementation of preventive conservation programs and initiatives to protect and preserve the Museum's collections with a particular focus on collection hazard management.



This is a dynamic role that requires collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, this includes within the Registration and Conservation business unit as well as other areas across the Museum. This role will seek expert advice or analysis when required, such as from specialist hazard or occupational hygiene professionals. The Senior Conservator, Preventive and Collection Hazard Management will contribute significantly to the museum's efforts in major upcoming collection storage projects but also have a role in all areas of the business including general collection management, risk assessment, and materials research, while also providing expert conservation advice in exhibition, loan, and acquisitions programs.

Key accountabilities

The Preventive Conservation team works to care for the Museum’s collections through:


Collection management, preventive conservation programs, hazard management and mitigation. The application of risk management to the care and management of the collections. Ensuring safe work practices, compliance and permits as well as meeting legislative requirements are in place/met. Conservation treatments, analysis and assessment relating to newly acquired or existing collection. Working collaboratively with other sections within the Museum and providing preservation advice to other sections Various other activities, as directed, across the Museum including relevant activity around internal exhibitions, travelling exhibitions, and loans. Demonstrate a strong commitment to Work Health and Safety (WH&S) by actively supporting a positive safety culture, following the Museum’s WHS policies and procedures, and complying with reasonable instructions to ensure alignment with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.

In this role, you will contribute to collection hazard identification and mitigation across all sites, supporting the protection of the Museum’s collections from both immediate and long-term risks. You will assist in promoting preventive conservation practices, support the development of sustainability initiatives, and apply relevant regulations to ensure compliance. Working collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders, you will help implement effective solutions and contribute to continuous improvement in the care of the Museum’s collections.
