The Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS) investigates climate dynamics and climate-related social dynamics, as well as the interactions between the two. To this end, we are looking for colleagues from a wide range of disciplines, including the natural sciences as well as the social sciences. CLICCS is an ambitious research program at University of Hamburg and its partner institutions. Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), it is part of Germany’s Excellence Strategy. The position is part of the project ‘Climate Policy Formation: Predictions, Preferences and Politics’ (CLICCS S4). The project uses randomized controlled trials with panels of households and municipalities as well as large language models and automated text analysis to identify the causal effects of climate-related knowledge actionable for individual and municipal decision making on citizens' preferences and the policy-making process via public debates and electoral politics.
Your responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Your responsibilities as a senior research associate include:
support the scientific design of a German online panel, the interventions and revealed-preference outcome measures in cooperation with the project chairs and other researchers in the project
design, pre-registration, and analysis of experiments conducted within the online panel
analysing speeches, social media, and legislative texts employing large language models and automated text analysis
independently designing and conducting theoretical work and empirical research on the legislative process of climate policy making and the involvement of different groups such as voters, scientists, interest groups and politicians
connecting and integrating research within the S4 project
contributing to overall interdisciplinary synthesis of CLICCS
developing and (co-)authoring articles to be published in leading international academic journals
presenting research at national and international conferences
management tasks (e.g., organization of collaboration within the project and with other projects of the cluster, organization of workshops)
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.
a PhD (or equivalent) in economics, political science or related academic fields with very good or excellent results
advanced knowledge and experience in designing, conducting and analysing survey-based experiments
advanced knowledge and experience with data science methods, especially automated text analysis and large language models
good proficiency in techniques of quantitative empirical research
prior knowledge in climate policy and environmental economics
publications in peer-reviewed international journals in economics or political science
experience in team work in an interdisciplinary environment and in project management
proficiency in English (spoken and written) is essential, proficiency in German is an advantage
