THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:



research in the field of microbiology with the aim of developing new and improved genetic methods in anaerobic non-standard microorganisms evaluate literature and database searches to identify suitable genetic targets omics analyses to identify suitable genetic targets establish genetic methods and generate genetically-modified strains validate and characterize microbial strains by carrying out microbiological, biochemical, and genetic experiments data evaluation organize and conduct project meetings present data at conferences and publish research results opportunity for travel in Europe and the USA for collaborative work, requiring stays of between 6-8 weeks throughout the entire project period

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:



completed university degree (diploma, master's or comparable degree) in biology or a comparable field (e.g., biochemistry) completed doctorate, preferably in microbiology or at least in a comparable field (e.g., biochemistry, microbial genetics) in-depth knowledge and practical experience in the fields of microbiology, protein chemistry, and microbial genetics experience in working with anaerobic microorganisms and in conducting experiments toward genetic manipulation of anaerobic and/or non-standard microorganisms is desirable experience in the following methods is desirable: Protein purification via FPLC (e.g. ÄKTA), biochemical work with oxygen-sensitive enzymes, analysis of metabolites using HPLC and/or GC, qPCR experience in the analysis of large bioinformatic datasets is desirable several years of relevant professional experience including student supervision and the presentation and publication of research results is desirable proficient in communicating in English (written and oral) willingness to travel and conduct laboratory experiments in partner laboratories (international) willingness to work in a laboratory of safety level S2 desirable

In the Microbiology Department of the Institute of Biological Sciences at University of Rostock, we investigate the physiology and the biochemistry of non-standard anaerobic microorganisms, including thermophiles, acetogens, and bacteria inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract. We apply our findings from our basic research toward generating microbial strains of potential biotechnological relevance.
