At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technologies, Chair of Ship Design, subject to allocation of funds, we are filling the following position as of 01.02.2026 on a temporary basis for the duration of the project "DesignAssist" ending expectedly on 31.01.2029:

The DesignAssist project aims to develop a toolkit for the early phase of ship design. This toolkit will contain selected computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools and systems that will help naval architects assess the economic efficiency and carbon footprint of modular, future-proof newbuilds and possible retrofit options for existing ships. The aim is to make better use of the limited resources available in the early design phase in order to reduce costs and emissions over the life cycle of future ships on a more informed basis.



THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:



research in the field of data-driven ship design developing machine learning models for generating ship hulls, taking energy saving technologies into account and evaluating performance in the early design phase generating training data sets for machine learning models developing quality assurance methods for machine learning models in the early ship design phase collaborate with project partners present your research at scientific conferences and publish them in peer-reviewed journals creating and maintaining media for project-related public relations work

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:



completed university degree (diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in naval architecture and ocean engineering, mechanical engineering or a comparable field with at least good results experience in using engineering design and calculation tools experience in programming, preferably with Python knowledge of ship design and ship hydrodynamics desirable are knowledge of the development and application of machine learning methods in an engineering context desirable are relevant experience in project management and publishing research results very good written and spoken English and basic knowledge of German or willingness to acquire this knowledge in a short period of time very good time management skills, communication skills for presenting research results, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
