Seaweeds contain various structural and storage polysaccharides, which cannot be found in land plants. The unique chemistry of these polysaccharides makes them promising raw materials for producing bioplastics and composite materials. The Makrobio project aims to utilise this potential to develop new biomaterials for applications in the marine aquaculture sector.

THESE ARE YOUR TASKS:

research in the field of algal glycobiology and aquaculture extracting, purifying and characterising polysaccharides from green, red and brown algae monitoring algal biomass production in photobioreactorses phenotyping clonal algal strains under various growth conditions scientific teaching in the frame of the project, e.g. co-supervising Bachelor- or Master students, whereby the research-based transfer of specialist knowledge and skills to students is central and they are instructed to work scientifically on their own due to the scientific nature of teaching

THIS MAKES YOU A GOOD FIT:

completed university degree (state exam, diploma, master's degree or comparable degree) in marine biology, plant science, agriculture or a comparable field practical experiences in working with algal cultures, preferably with non-model organisms practical experiences in extracting and characterising sugars/polysaccharides from algal or plant biomass, e.g. via chromatography methods practical experiences in probe-based bioimaging practical experiences in assessing algal growth performance, e.g. photosynthesis measurements confident knowledge of the English language, written and spoken motivation to work in an international team and committed to regularly discuss experimental results and protocols with the thesis supervisor and during group meetings high motivation to publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present them at conferences

Become part of the team

Our group is intrigued by green algae/plants, specifically their capability to produce various polysaccharides. Many of these polysaccharides are among the most abundant biopolymers known and are key resources in our society (food, fodder, fiber, fuel). With our research, we aim to better understand how algae/plants allocate their carbon to polysaccharides and constantly remodel them via various types of enzymes. We try to use this knowledge to enhance sustainable biomass production.

We look forward to receiving your application!
