JOB OVERVIEW
The Physical Science Technician serves as a laboratory technician in the Public Health Command-Europe (PHCE) Laboratory Sciences (LS) in the areas of receipt and processing of public health surveillance-related samples and preparation of environmental sampling kits in accordance with the LS' integrated Quality Management System. Work requires a general knowledge of typical laboratory equipment as well as skill and judgment in obtaining accurate data.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of physical science with a basic knowledge of quantitative liquid measurement and delivery
An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited university preferred
Able to perform multi-step procedures and operate laboratory instruments
Able to understand, write, read and speak in English
Knowledge of Laboratory Sciences’ Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office software applications
Vehicle driving ability required
Able to lift items up to 50 pounds
Able to pass a required pre-employment physical examination
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Use volumetric glassware such as pipettes, burettes, volumetric flasks, and graduated cylinders; set up, calibrate, and operate simple laboratory equipment such as pH meter, balance, conductivity, and turbidity meter, and thermometer
Document lab work in order to meet the requirements for measurement traceability as mandated by LS' Quality System
Perform pre-analytical checks on water, wastewater, soil, bulk solids, food, and other public health-related samples
Prepare sampling containers including the addition of liquid and solid preservatives
Enter sample information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
Forward samples to be sub-contracted to one of LS’ approved sub-contractors
Coordinate with customers who require sampling kits, scheduling the date required, number of kits, and number of sampling bottles and vials per kit based on the types of analyses and priority requested by the customer
Ensure proper preparation of sampling vials to include the addition of correct vial labels and method-stipulated preservatives
Prepare sample preservatives using volumetric glassware, balances, and pipettes
Ensure kits are tracked and follow up with customers who have not returned unused kits within a one-year timeframe
Maintain an inventory and minimum three-month on-hand stock of the required consumable supplies (reagents, chemicals, bottles, labels, packing material, coolers, etc.)
Maintain and restock laboratory supply areas and maintain proper storage in chemical storerooms
Comply with all health and safety requirements at all times
Perform routine health and safety duties such as checks of safety showers, eyewashes, and fire extinguishers and ensures safe handling of chemicals and hazardous waste
Promote and maintain good housekeeping in all laboratories, lab support areas, and storage areas
