We invite applications from highly motivated PhD candidates to join our distinguished research team undertaking an advanced project on the role of gut microbiota in mediating resistance to immunotherapy and chemotherapy in colorectal cancer. The project will be conducted within a close collaboration between University Hospital Heidelberg and DKFZ. The successful candidate will contribute to a multidisciplinary collaboration focused on identifying microbial-derived factors that influence tumor immunogenicity. The project aims to uncover and validate novel therapeutic targets and combination strategies to overcome microbiome-associated immune suppression in colorectal cancer.

Participate in recruitment and biobanking of patient material
Integrate comprehensive multi-omics datasets—including metabolomics, high-dimensional flow cytometry, and multiplex imaging—to accurately determine crucial molecular and cellular processes in colorectal cancer
Carry out experimental validation using both in vitro models derived from mouse and human organoids and in vivo studies using advanced preclinical systems to confirm mechanisms and the effectiveness of identified drug candidates
Your profile
----------------
Hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline such as Cancer Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, or related fields.
Meet all academic requirements specified by the Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School (HBIGS)
Possess strong expertise in molecular and cellular biology methods, including high-dimensional flow cytometry, gene expression profiling, and both two-dimensional and three-dimensional cell culture, alongside microbiology techniques.
Experience with metabolomics and proficiency in data analysis are highly preferred.
Exhibit excellent communication and organizational abilities, capable of working independently as well as in collaborative team environments.
