DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
We are seeking two motivated PhD candidates to develop a novel multi-scale imaging method at synchrotron radiation facilities, particularly PETRA III at DESY. Samples, be they biological or from materials science, often have a hierarchical structure that determines their function. It is not feasible to scan the full volume of such samples at the highest desired resolution. Therefore, we require an imaging scheme that acquires relevant features at different length scales and integrates them into a single reconstruction volume. The PhD projects aim to develop and implement this novel local adaptive tomography (LAT) scheme, which will allow us to efficiently measure and reconstruct hierarchically organised samples. To achieve this, we need to improve our understanding of the physical image formation and data recovery processes, among other topics. The advertised positions will focus on these topics. One position is in the "X-Ray Nanoscience and X-Ray Optics" group and the other is in the "Computational Imaging" group. The PhD projects are embedded in the frame of the ErUM data project CmarT.
