The lab of Prof. Dr. Tobias Hermle at the Division of Nephrology, Medical Center – University of Freiburg, is offering a
PhD position in nephrology (m/f/d)
======================================
The research project, with secure funding for at least three years, with an emphasis on genetic kidney diseases, is integrated into the collaborative research center on nephrogenetics (SFB 1453).
The Hermle lab investigates hereditary glomerulopathies, with a focus on monogenic causes of nephrotic syndrome and albuminuria. Central to this research is the podocyte, the key epithelial cell at the core of the (patho)biology of these diseases. Conceptually intertwined, the lab also studies the biology of the glomerular filtration barrier, emphasizing the molecular architecture, functional dynamics, and signaling pathways of the slit diaphragm. To investigate podocytes, we employ a complementary set of models, including Drosophila nephrocytes and knockout mice as in independent vivo platforms, alongside in vitro studies using kidney organoids. This integrated approach allows us to dissect molecular pathways, study genetic contributions, and translate findings across species and experimental systems. With a strong publication record and international collaborations, the lab provides an inspiring environment with excellent opportunities for scientific development.
We offer:
working in a collaborative scientific community with close supervision and strong support. The working atmosphere is characterized by teamwork, openness, and a shared enthusiasm for research
the opportunity to join an international and multidisciplinary graduate program at the University of Freiburg (SGBM, Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine)
a 3-year 65% PhD position
Job description:
drosophila genetics and broad phenotypic characterization, with a focus on high-resolution fluorescence microscopy for immunostainings, live-cell imaging, and functional tracer studies
analyses of human iPSC-derived kidney organoids and other in vitro models (immunostaining, co-immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting)
mouse genetics and phenotypic assessment, including assays for proteinuria, in situ hybridization, kidney histopathology, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy
complex DNA cloning for transgenesis and genome editing
What we are looking for:
we are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with a strong interest in basic research with clinical relevance
the applicant should hold a master’s degree in Biology, Medicine, Molecular Medicine, or an equivalent discipline
experience in cell and molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy, and the mice or Drosophila models is desirable but not mandatory
