The mechanical design group at DESY in Zeuthen comprises 7 engineers, 1 draftsmen and 1 technician. The group supports the scientific groups of the institute in all projects. We seek to fill one 2-year position, which can be prolonged depending on funding, for the ULTRASAT satellite project. ULTRASAT is a UV space mission. Its primary science objective is to search for counterparts of gravitational wave sources. The mission is led by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the Israeli Space Agency and is planned to be in orbit by 2026. DESY develops and produces the UV camera for the ULTRASAT mission. The team is currently working on producing the first prototype of the camera.
Daily tasks include 3D design, preparation of production and tender documents, definition of technological processes, production support, assembly and commissioning of the developed equipment (e. g. jigs) as well as the preparation of documentation.
  • Development and 3D design of complex mechanical components and jigs for integration
  • Preparation of production drawings
  • Design accompanying calculations
  • Definition of technological processes and commissioning of developed devices and jigs
  • Procurement of components for technical (test) setups
  • Preparation of production documents and documentation in general
  • Production and integration support
  • Supervision of space-typical environmental verification campaigns
  • Collaboration in international cooperations
  • University degree (applied sciences or bachelor or master) in engineering in the field of scientific instrumentation, general mechanical engineering or physical engineering or equivalent expertise, skills and experience
  • Very good technical knowledge and experience in design, CAD (ideally SIEMENS TC NX 10)
  • Expertise in FEM simulations (ANSYS) desirable
  • Expertise in design for space applications desirable
  • Ability to work on assembly and testing
  • Ability to participate in international working groups and to work independently and systematically as part of a team
  • Good knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken
