About DeZIM



DeZIM e. V., founded in 2017 as a non-university research institute in the field of migration and integration, is a federal govern-ment research organisation re-sponsible for research and devel-opment in the areas of family, equality, children and youth, senior citizens and engagement policy.

What does the job involve?



The Migration Department at the DeZIM Institute focuses on international, cross-border migration processes to and from Europe and Germany. Its research ranges from migration aspirations and decision-making processes to migration governance and regulations, as well as interlinkages with societal, political, and economic dynamics surrounding migration and related solidarity practices. To strengthen and further develop its quantitative research, the department is looking for a researcher interested in pursuing their Ph.D. in the course of a departmental project on migration governance and migration brokers. The researcher will co-design and conduct own as well as joint research and contribute to the larger departmental research agenda. The position involves using primary and secondary cross-sectional survey and panel data as well as exploiting register, administrative, text corpus and other (big) data sources.

Tasks



Co-design, implementation, and publication of quantitative studies on migration, (im)mobility, and societal dynamics in line with the department's research themes. Conducting research within a project on migration governance and migration brokers, with a possibility of cumulative Ph.D. Further development of the department's quantitative research agenda (FAIR data use and generation; causal inference; machine learning methods). Supporting the acquisition of third-party funding – including drafting funding applications. Presentation of research results at scientific conferences, workshops and colloquia; and knowledge transfer to non-academic stakeholders (e.g. media, politicians, civil society). Participation in the development and maintenance of research data infrastructures.

Profile



Excellent M.A. in sociology, political science, econometrics, economics, or related social or data sciences with a strong quantitative focus. Proven expertise in advanced statistical methods and causal inference (e.g. diff-in-diffs, RDDs, multivariate panel models, propensity score matching, Bayesian methods, machine learning). Confident use of at least one common statistical or programming language (R, Stata, or Python), including reproducibility workflows (Git, R Markdown, Jupyter). Sound knowledge of migration, refugee, or mobility research and strong interest in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary issues. Openness to contribute to mixed-methods project. Publication experience in peer-reviewed journals is of advantage. Excellent written and spoken English and good German skills; other languages are welcome. Team and project management skills, ability to work independently. The position will be based in Berlin and necessitates weekly in-person presence.

Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD Bund) and can be paid up to pay group 13 TVöD (federal government) depending on personal requirements. This also includes a company pension (VBL), a special annual payment and capital-forming benefits.

The position is limited to three years, with a possibility for extension subject to the WissZeitVG. The interviews are expected to take place between November 10 and 11, 2025.
