The Joint Firearms Unit brings together hundreds of people with the same aim – to keep the communities of South Wales, Gwent, and Dyfed Powys safe.


We want to be the best at understanding and responding to our community’s needs. To do this we need the very best candidates from a wide range of backgrounds to apply to become part of our policing family.


The Joint Firearms Unit is a collaboration of armed assets for South Wales, Gwent, and Dyfed Powys Police. The Unit performs at the highest threat level. It is a face paced, interesting and a dynamic working environment. No one day will be the same.


We are looking for people to #joinus on a permanent/full time basis in the following roles:

Armed Response Vehicle Officer

– Currently accredited or accredited within the last two years ARV officers at PC and Sergeant level

National Firearms Instructor

– Currently accredited or accredited within the last two years, PC, Sergeant and Police staff levels (The current salary for Police Staff Instructors is: £31,232 - £36,507 – if successful you will be employed with a starting salary of £31,232.)

Counter Terrorist Specialist Firearms Officer

– Currently accredited or accredited within the last two years, PC and Sergeant level

Authorised Firearms Officer

- Currently accredited or accredited within the last two years, PC and Sergeant level (Home office forces only)

This process is NOT applicable to existing ARV officers currently serving within the Southern Welsh Region. As the Joint Firearms Unit is a Regional Unit if successful you could be posted anywhere in the Southern Welsh Region (Gwent, South Wales and Dyfed Powys Police).


The Joint Firearms Unit has bases in Rumney (Cardiff) South Wales Police/Gwent Police, Cross hands (South Wales Police/Dyfed Powys Police), Llandrindod Wells (Dyfed Powys Police) and Milford Haven (Dyfed Powys Police).


Location preferences will be considered but not guaranteed.


Please note that if transferring to Dyfed Powys Police there is the requirement to live within 30 miles/one hour of your base.
