The Centre for Organismal Studies Heidelberg (COS Heidelberg) is a central scientific institution of Heidelberg University with 23 research groups representing the entire breadth of the life sciences in research and teaching. The following full-time, permanent position is available in the central IT infrastructure of the centre from the earliest possible date:

IT engineer (f/m/d)

with a focus on operations and research data management

Your tasks:

Consolidation and further development of the center?s research data management:



Implementation of data backup and data storage concepts in cooperation with IT colleagues and scientists at COS Heidelberg and the University Computing Center Management and migration of large amounts of data Metadata management and archiving

Planning, implementation, operation and documentation of complex IT projects in the areas of IT infrastructure, servers, administration and data centers:

User administration and rights management Network configuration and operation, including firewall systems, in cooperation with the University Computing Center Client management under Windows, Mac and Linux OS Support for virtual infrastructure Installation and administration of hardware servers and virtual machines (primarily Linux OS) Setup and operation of web services under Docker, database systems, file servers Server backup support Procurement, commissioning, support and maintenance of hardware and software Incident and problem management Creation and maintenance of technical documentation for the server infrastructure Development and monitoring of IT security concepts IT contact person for scientists in cooperation with the IT group at COS Training of users

Your profile:

Completed scientific higher education, (Master?s degree or university diploma) in the field of computer science, e. g. computer science, data science, bioinformatics or a related field or in the natural sciences At least 3 years of professional experience in the planning, implementation and optimization of complex IT infrastructures Sound network knowledge (security, VLAN, routing, switching, firewall) Very good knowledge of Linux, as well as good knowledge of Windows, Windows Server and macOS Knowledge of virtual infrastructures and container solutions (VMware, Docker) Knowledge of automated tools for the installation, configuration and administration of heterogeneous computer environments Sound knowledge in the areas of web services, server administration Knowledge of designing and managing large storage systems Experience with project and network documentation Experience with incident and problem management High level of communication skills and reliability, ability to work in a team as well as independently Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English
